What I WantedI researched a large number of mousing surfaces before settling on trying this one. My goal was to find a mousing surface that was functional and improved my mousing experience for both gaming and graphic design, that was durable, would not damage desktop surfaces, and was also aesthetically pleasing--all while remaining in a reasonable price range. Most of the big name precision gaming mousing surfaces have a very big price to go along with the name. I definitely wanted to stay under $30 with the goal of actually staying under $20 if at all possible. I certainly was not going to spend $60 to over $100 which I discovered was actually very possible when looking for a precision surface. I do realize this is a pretty tall order but the Speed By Surface has come through for all of my goals. My ImpressionsThis is the best mousing surface I have ever used. I will admit up front that it is the first precision mousing surface I have tried so I do not have a lot of experience but I am incredibly impressed by the smooth glide and lack of glitchiness it produces. Movement is much more accurate on screen and incredibly more responsive. When this mousing surface arrived it not only met my expectations but, so far, nearly surpasses many of them. I went with the naked aluminum color which I find very pleasing to the eye and which happens to match my iMac. It is actually a nice contrast to some of my other peripherals (Razer Naga, Logitech G13 keypad, Wacom Tablet) which are black. As I mentioned above the mouse glides on it beautifully with much more responsiveness and a lack of stuttering or other glitchiness. I do not have the need but if I wanted to use it in my lap or the arm of a chair it is strong enough to give a solid surface while still having a very thin 2 mm profile when on my desk. It is just heavy enough that I do not think it would move around much any way but the non-slip silicon backing makes it very solid on the desk. The size is perfect for giving a good mousing area on which you do not have to keep readjusting your position without taking up an inordinate amount of room. If space was at a premium its profile is flat enough that you could put one end of your keyboard on the edge of it if necessary without an issue but it is so nice looking I would not want to cover it that way. Though it has a substantial feel, it is still light enough that a person could pop it in a brief case to use on the go. It even comes with a protective cover that you can slip it into.ComparisonsI did a lot of searching and researching of reviews before purchasing. You can get very thin mousing surfaces that have a tacky bottom to keep them from sliding around. The tacky surface on these works fine for some desks but ruins the finish for other types of wooden surfaces. They also attract dirt, hair, dust, etc and lose their tackiness while becoming gross. Some had the complaint of the mousing surface becoming scratched up and no longer precise after a relatively short time. The thinness may have played a part in this lack of durability. These are very inexpensive so maybe frequent replacement cost is not an issue but I wanted to get something that I would not have to worry about replacing for a good long while. I also ruled out fabric surfaces as, in my experience, they are not very durable and are susceptible to grime. There are a wide range of hard plastic surfaces available and I had figured that I would end up with one of those. I became very impressed with what I learned about the reasonably priced fUnc mousing surfaces. From what I read in the reviews the hard plastic surface will wear out eventually but it looks like you can get replacement surfaces to put into the non slip base.Aluminum is durable and looks very nice which meets my wishes for it to be aesthetically pleasing. So before deciding on a hard plastic surface I looked through available aluminum pads. Many of the very thin ones had an aluminum coating which looked very nice but from reviews was about as thick as foil without an engineered tracking pattern. Many high end precision surfaces, such as SteelSeries or Razer, are once again very high priced. fUnc also has an aluminum model of their sUrface1030 Archetype but it of course is a bit higher priced than I was willing to go. Then I stumbled on this Speed By Surface mouse pad. It comes in either the naked aluminum (silver) color or black and has a silicon non-slip coating on the bottom.SummationAll in all, I am very pleased with this mousing surface and would recommend it to anyone. For a couple bucks more a person can get the black one if that is more to their taste. If there are any changes or problems in the future I will certainly update here but I do not foresee such issues at this time.
